NAVUH

Navuh prided himself on his ability to anticipate other people’s moves, but getting an invitation from Areana had taken him completely by surprise.

What did she want?

It sure as hell was not about her suddenly realizing that she found him irresistible. If it were any other female, he could have believed that, but not Areana, who had not spared any male a glance since her mate had been killed.

Such loyalty was admirable, if misplaced.

The god had allowed himself to get captured and decapitated by humans. Ahnon had been a weakling.

Sweet, soft Areana was so defenseless. A female like her needed a strong male by her side. Someone who would protect her and keep her safe. Thankfully, she had stayed home the day her mate had been murdered. Navuh shuddered as he imagined what would have been done to her by those bandits if she had joined him.

“Tell your lady I will arrive within an hour.” He dismissed the courier.

The man bowed. “Thank you, my lord. Would you require directions to my lady’s house?”

“That will not be necessary. I know the way.”

Areana did not reside in a temple, but her home was open to every widow and orphan who needed help. Her funding must come from the palace because her worshipers were not the kind who brought gifts.

The courier bowed again. “I will deliver your message with due haste, my lord.”

Given that Areana’s house was about twenty minutes away on horseback, Navuh did not have much time to get ready. He washed in cold water because there was no time for the servants to heat it up for him, he shaved even though he had shaved that morning, and he put on a fresh tunic—black, of course, like all of his clothing, but with gold embroidery on the sleeves.

He liked to dress well, and his clothes were made by the best seamstresses money could buy. There was an element of vanity to it, as looking good pleased him, but that was not the main reason. As a non-god holding a god’s position, Navuh needed every advantage available to him.

Then again, he did not want to appear soft or overly indulgent, especially not to Areana, which meant that he was not going to take the carriage.

Accompanied only by two warriors, he arrived at her place on horseback. Naturally, he left the guards in the goddess’s front yard and entered her home alone.

The maid who opened the door bowed deep. “Good evening, Lord Navuh. My lady awaits your arrival in her reception room.”

He followed the human inside, wondering if she was one of the widows Areana had taken under her wing. The woman was not old by human standards, but she was not young either.

What would become of them once their lady was gone?

It was none of his concern. If Areana did not arrange for someone else to take over, Ahn would have to do it for her.

As he entered her reception room, Areana rose to her feet with a forced smile on her beautiful face.
